Continuing our adventure, we arrive at the awe-inspiring Todra Gorge, where towering canyon walls offer a remarkable backdrop for exploration and adventure.
Your Marrakech to Erg Chigaga Morocco desert tour will begin at 7:30 AM with a pick-up from your Marrakech hotel or riad. As we depart Marrakech, we’ll journey through the Atlas Mountains via the Tichka Pass, offering splendid views. Along the way, we’ll make several stops for you to take in the scenery and capture photographs.
Our next stop will be Ouarzazate, where we’ll have lunch before continuing our journey to Zagora. We’ll cross the Draa River, which has nurtured a vast oasis that stretches for about 200 km at the foothills of the Anti-Atlas Mountains. Along the way, you’ll witness several palm groves providing shade amidst kasbahs and fortified villages, surrounded by fields of corn, barley, vegetables, and henna plantations.
After our scenic drive, we’ll arrive in Zagora for dinner and overnight stay at your chosen hotel.
After breakfast, our journey continues as we drive to M’hamid, which is where the paved road ends. Along the way, we’ll pass through the village of Tamagroute, where you’ll have the chance to visit one of the oldest Quranic libraries in Morocco. Nearby, there’s a famous kasbah known for its pottery factory.
Lunch will be served in M’hamid at a leisurely pace. In the early afternoon, we’ll set off for the Erg Chigaga dunes, traversing through different features of the desert such as ‘Erg,’ ‘Reg,’ ‘Hammadas,’ and oases. The Chigaga dunes are quite remote, far from civilization, and the silence of the sand is truly overwhelming.
Upon arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to ride camels across the dunes, experiencing one of the most breathtaking sunsets as the sands change color in the evening light. Later, enjoy a splendid dinner under the stars next to a campfire, where local nomads will entertain you with their traditional music.
Your overnight stay will be at your Sahara desert camp, surrounded by the magnificent dunes, providing a unique and memorable desert experience.
After breakfast, our journey continues through another 90km of diverse desert scenery. We’ll first cross the flat, dried salt lake of Iriqui and pass by the Anti Atlas mountains, following the historic track of the « Rally Paris Dakar. »
Our next stop is Foum Zguid, the first village we encounter after the desert, marking the beginning of the paved road. After lunch in Foum Zguid, we’ll continue our journey to the Berber village of Taznakht, renowned for its exquisite Berber carpets and rugs.
Late in the afternoon, we’ll arrive in Ouarzazate, a city known as the « Gateway to the Sahara » and famous for its film studios and stunning Kasbahs. Dinner and overnight accommodations will be provided at your hotel in Ouarzazate, where you can relax and reflect on the incredible experiences of the desert journey.
Following breakfast, we will embark on a westward journey for a brief drive to explore the enchanting Berber villages nestled near Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a renowned site that stands as one of Morocco’s most visited attractions. This kasbah is celebrated for its exceptional Moroccan earthen clay architecture, earning it the prestigious title of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Serving as a pivotal production site for numerous films, it lies along the former caravan route traversing the High Atlas Mountains from Marrakech to the Sahara desert.
Originally constructed by the formidable warlord « Elgloui » in the late 19th century, Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou offers a glimpse into Morocco’s rich history and architectural heritage. Following our exploration here, we will journey across the majestic High Atlas Mountains as we make our way back to Marrakech, marking the end of our services.
